THE CHALLENGE
Arctic tourism is increasing largely through the cruise ship industry, which puts an environmental footprint on sensitive habitats and cultural and natural heritage sites. Authorities are increasing the number of regulations. Small-scale sailing tour operators provide alternative experiences with low-footprint operations, but they do not yet have a voice in the formulation of best practices adapted for sustainable and safe small-scale operations in the area. The project will address that by forming a community of practice.

THE PROJECT GOAL
The overall long-term objective is to build a community of practice (COP) for sustainable small-scale eco-responsible sailboat experience tourism in the Arctic, giving a voice to this niche of local entrepreneurship in relation to larger ships and to authorities. Co-created eco-stewardship (e.g. beach cleaning) and various citizen science activities can add value to clients, local communities, and research organizations, which would strengthen small local vessel operators towards competent large-scale operators and authorities.
