2025: The Nexus-project
Ocean monitoring in multi-stressor areas – Hellenic Volcanic Arc, Greece. Funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe Programme, Grant Agreement No.101079156 (Nexus-Monarch).We will be supported by Sailing4Science's MotherShip, the 67-foot sailing ocean lab and expedition yacht Hrimfare, as our observation and monitoring platform for the expedition from Athens to the project’s expedition in the Hellenic Volcanic Arc in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, starting in November 2025.
Challenge
The Hellenic Volcanic Arc in the Mediterranean Sea, is influenced by multiple stressors of anthropogenic and natural origin, such as maritime transport, fisheries, industrial tourism, volcanic activity, hydrothermal venting, and others. There is a lack of guidelines and scientific protocols for training and collaborative actions, improved administrative and management practices made easily accessible and applicable to other multi-stressor marine environments around the world.
Objective
The Nexus project’s objective is to develop a framework for collaborative research projects responsible for handling marine multi-stressors areas. Enabling coordinating and partnering institutions to adopt twinning activities and participation to incite local and international stakeholders from public, policy, and industry to contribute to the educational and scientific sectors in their region while actively helping improve the marine environment and protecting its inhabitants. This will be achieved through transferring knowledge and best practices based on the extensive expertise of partner institutions and by orchestrating citizen science activities.
