The two weeks of sailing for science expedition around the Aegean Sea in Greece, recently came back to Athens. The sailors, students, and scientists have been collecting samples and meeting up with schools and the general public in marinas. The project management can conclude a fruitful expedition and closing activity for a successful project that started back in 2023. The "flagship expedition" collected scientific water samples along the voyage and arranged pop-up tent expos in Kos, Nisyros, Santorini, Milos, and later in Methana.

Science, showcasing, and sailing

Water sampling was conducted for multiple scientific purposes, including environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, nanoparticle characterization, micro- and macroplastic assessment, and CTD profiling of the water column. In parallel, this expedition engaged students and citizen scientists, promoting education in marine ecosystem ecology, marine pollution, and environmental stewardship. Participants gained hands-on experience in sampling using frugal tools and received an introduction to sailing, with crew-led knowledge sharing enabling local communities to contribute sustainably to marine conservation efforts.
